Could damage to the exterior of a refrigerator door be considered a deficiency or being as it does not
directly affect the functioning of the appliance it is ok?

Generally, no. Technically, there are only 4 conditions that matter for the fridge: 1 – gasket deteriorated, 2 – excess ice, 3 – not cooling, 4 – missing.
