Must gas cans be stored in cabinet?

Flammable Material: are all gas cans required to be stored in a cabinet? Can they be stored on a shelf
away from electrical components?

It is important to understand that the UPCS is a set of definitions that determine what an inspector cites as a defect, but it is not a set of guidelines on how to do things. The UPCS does not specify how repairs are made, and it does not specify what is “okay.” There is no REAC rule that says “all gas cans must be stored in a properly installed flammable materials locker.”
There is only a definition that says the inspector will cite a defect if flammable materials are improperly stored – and there is not a clear explanation of what is improper, let alone what is proper. Sadly, REAC is pretty vague on this.
You should not look to REAC for advice on how to store gasoline, you should look to OSHA. OSHA is the organization that publishes safety rules like that.
The UPCS is an INSPECTION standard, not a MAINTENANCE standard. Yes, 99.9% of people understand this as implying certain requirements, but that’s not really true.
