Besides Ballasts, What other types of room membrane are we likely to see?
Ballast is the gravel that lays on top of the rubber membrane. A membrane made of rubber, or some form of material similar to rubber, may or may not be ballasted. A white PVC or TPO roof membrane will usually not be ballasted. A ballasted roof membrane is typically not anchored or adhered
continuously across the surface of the roof – it will only be attached at points. A non-ballasted roof is generally stuck down more-or-less continually.
On older buildings you may encounter a modified bitumen membrane – it’s kind of like a tar shingle rolled material, with sprinkles of grit like a shingle. You may also encounter an asphalt impregnated felt roofing material that will usually have a thin coating of chipped gravel as opposed to heavier river stone
type ballast.
