What is the purpose of a clean out?
Sewer clogs can happen right at a drain. They can happen right at a toilet. But they can also happen way down the line, where the sewer has exited the home and gone underground toward the city’s sewer system.
The “clean out” is what allows you to “clean out” the pipe further along, away from the sink or toilet, maybe even completely outside the house. It is literally an intentional opening in the pipe that is intended to allow us to insert a mechanical “snake” to “snake out” obstructions like tree roots that have
grown into the sewer system or foreign objects that have backed up in the sewer pipe.
